2009 NHL Draft: Ten winners in Montreal
Anaheim Ducks draft pick Peter Holland puts on his new jersey as general manager Bob Murray, right, looks on.
Murray worked the best deal of the draft when he acquired two players and a slew of draft picks for All-Star defenseman Chris Pronger.
USA TODAY’s Kevin Allen offers a ranking of notable personnell performances at this weekend’s NHL draft in Montreal:
| 1. | Anaheim Ducks | Toronto GM Brian Burke called Anaheim GM Bob Murray “the star of the first day of draft” because of the package of talent he received for parting with Chris Pronger. He received Joffrey Lupul, Luca Sbisa, plus two first-round picks. Also, center Peter Holland and forward Kyle Palmieri were both noteworthy picks. | |
| 2. | Calgary Flames | Acquired Jay Bouwmeester’s negotiating rights from Florida, and they believe they can sign him before he becomes unrestricted on July 1. | |
| 3. | New York Islanders | Turned out there was no mystery as the Islanders paid homage to their fans by selecting John Tavares. They then aggressively moved up to take defenseman Calvin De Haan, a player that most scouts seemed to like. | |
| 4. | Nashville Predators | Ryan Ellis is small, but he’s a dynamic blue line presence and Minnesota high school standout Zach Budish is 6-3, 230 and he could be a monstrous NHL forward. | |
| 5. | Tampa Bay Lightning | With a history of sub-par drafting, the Lightning did it right in 2009, landing premium defenseman Victor Hedman and then trading up to take Carter Ashton, son of former NHL player Brent Ashton. As skilled as Matt Duchene was, the Lightning needed Hedman. | |
| 6. | Atlanta Thrashers | With Evander Kane, Carl Klingberg and Jeremy Morin, the Thrashers drafted three players who were listed in the first round on some lists. Kane will play in the NHL next season. | |
| 7. | Detroit Red Wings | Were able to draft two players with first round talent, even though they didn’t select until the 32nd pick. They took Landon Ferraro, son of former NHL player Ray Ferraro, and Tomas Tarter, who reminds them of Marty Straka | |
| 8. | Philadelphia Flyers | Although the GM Paul Holmgren seemed to overpay, he landed the best player at the draft in difference-making defenseman Chris Pronger. He’s the kind of defenseman a team wants trying to deal with the likes of Alex Ovechkin, Evgeni Malkin and Eric Staal in the Eastern Conference. | |
| 9. | Colorado Avalanche | Matt Duchene has Steve Yzerman-like qualities in terms of skill and leadership. Plus, some teams had center Ryan O’Reilly listed as a first-rounder. | |
| 10. | Columbus Blue Jackets | Dazzling skater John Moore, a defenseman, was a high value pick at No. 21, and center Kevin Lynch could be a sleeper | |
