Ahh, your first love.  The butterflies!  The passion!  The intensity! Ladies and gentleman, it’s best that you try to forget that, ASAP!

All that first-love passion and intensity can wreck all subsequent romantic relationships, a new study finds (as reported in the Daily Mail).

Deep breath.  Take it in.  All that brooding over your old flame – so not doing you any good (as if I need to tell you that!).  And it could be doing you some serious harm, according to the Daily Mail.

A series of research papers entitled “Changing Relationships” by Dr. Malcolm Brynin at the Institute for Social and Economic Research at the University of Essex showed that those try to recreate the passion of an old romance are probably going to suffer in subsequent relationships.

Instead, it is better to take a more practical view of your relationship.

“Remarkably, it seems that the secret to long-term happiness in a relationship is to skip a first relationship,” Dr. Brynin told the Daily Mail.

“In an ideal world you would wake up already in your second relationship. If you had a passionate first relationship and allow that feeling to become your benchmark, it becomes inevitable that future, more adult partnerships will seem boring and a disappointment.”

“The problems start if you try not only to get everything you need for an adult relationship, but also strive for the heights of excitement and intensity you had in your first experience of love,” he added.

The Daily Mail mentions that this might have happened to Kate Moss, who had a four-year relationship with actor Johnny Depp.

She is famously quoted as saying, “I just haven’t found anyone I want to spend long periods with. I don’t think I’ve completely got over my relationship with Johnny Depp.”

Uh, oh, sounds like she’s brooding over her first love…
