Bernie Madoff bodyguard to quit

MADOFF LEGAL SECThe former NYPD detective who has been Bernie Madoff’s bodyguard since the accused Ponzi schemer has been out on bail is quitting.

Nicholas Casale said someone else will have to watch over Madoff in his East Side apartment because his company is not equipped to track down the disgraced money manager’s assets across the globe.

That duty was recently dumped on Casale when it was made a condition of Madoff’s bail.

“The added requirement of providing worldwide inventorying of your client’s possessions is something we are not structured to fulfill,” Casale wrote in a letter sent to Madoff attorneys on Monday and filed in Manhattan Federal Court Thursday.

Casale will be replaced by Stroz Friedberg Investigations on Feb. 1, whose tab will be picked up by Madoff’s wife.

Madoff is free on $10 million bail but is not allowed to leave his apartment. After prosecutors caught Madoff sending out jewelry to family and friends on Christmas Eve, Judge Lawrence McKenna ordered a full inventory of Madoff assets throughout the world.

Casale and his boss, Louis Anemone, were fired from the Metropolitan Transportation Authority in 2003.

In separate lawsuits, they claimed they were canned from their security posts after they attempted to expose corruption at the agency.
